The Only Person Stopping You Living Your Best Life Is You

I have always loved motivational quotes; they can help to inspire you when you’re having a hard day; they can reaffirm things when you’re having a good one; they can make you think. And sometimes they can stop you in your tracks. Like the following quote did to me today…

“Time is not refundable. Use it with intention.” Author Unknown

It literally made a shiver run down my spine. For a moment, I was filled with doubt and a bit of indecision.

Am I doing the right thing with my life?

Am I prioritising the right things?

Have I got time to see the changes I want to make through, is it even possible?

What will I actually achieve at the end of it?

I guess it was the inevitable doubt that creeps in when you start pushing forward with changes, the mind trying to bring things back into stability, into its safe equilibrium.

But then I re-evaluated what this quote actually meant and if I do nothing, I will just stay the same as I always have been. What then? That’s not using my time with intention at all. That’s just settling for what I have now. And I don’t want that. I don’t want to be the same this time next year. I want to change, grow and have new experiences.

I want to make a seismic shift in my life over the next year or so by taking small, gentle but braver steps forward. Moving things in the direction that I want my life to go in. That sounds pretty intentional to me.

When you have a clear idea of where you want to go in your life, it gives you the motivation to achieve it. You’ll always have moments of doubt, life will get in the way and you can get side-tracked. You need to say no more often to things that don’t fit with your plans; to shift your energy and focus on what’s important to you.

“Indecision steals many years from many people who wind up wishing they’d just had the courage to leap” — Doe Zantamada

This isn’t about becoming the most self-absorbed person on the planet. Your priorities could be helping others or spending more time with family and friends. It’s just about having a balance in your life so that the choices you make mean you enjoy your life more. You live the best life you possibly can. You make choices based on your goals and values and you don’t let other people make choices for you. You live with intention.

“Life is a matter of choices, and every choice you make makes you” — John C Maxwell

I don’t want to be chasing my dreams all the time, sometimes I just want to pause, slow down and just enjoy where I am at right now, and who I am with. That’s important too. I don’t want to be thinking all the time “oh I’ll be happy when I’ve got this or achieved that”. My life is good because of the people in it and I wouldn’t want any of them to think that I’m not happy where I am at when I am spending time with them. I just have a fire inside me.

I want to cause myself trouble. I want to shake things up for me. It doesn’t mean that I don’t want to take people on the journey with me.

“Days are long. But the years are short” — Gretchen Rubin
